Update on the Proposed MCPS Bus Depot

Dear Residents,

We have very good news to share.

Thanks to the collective efforts of our residents and community leaders, the Board of Education voted on October 15 to remove the proposed Shady Grove/Cavanaugh bus depot project from the Capital Improvements Program (CIP) at this time and restart the site selection process.

During the meeting, Board member Julie Yang questioned the process used to identify potential sites. MCPS staff acknowledged that the project description in the CIP did not specify the communities being considered. As a result, MCPS has committed to conducting a broader review before moving forward.

MCPS has indicated that over the next year it will:

  • Retain a real estate consultant to evaluate potential non-MCPS properties for a bus depot location.
  • Reassess all MCPS-owned properties to determine whether any existing MCPS sites may be suitable.

While this is a positive outcome for our community, the review process is expected to continue for a year or longer. We will remain engaged and monitor developments closely to ensure our community’s interests are represented.

What You Can Do

  1. Budget Hearings – October 26 & 27

A small number of representatives from the working group appointed by the two community boards plan to testify at the upcoming hearings.

If MCPS has offered you a testimony slot, participation is entirely your choice. Should you choose to testify, we encourage a simple and consistent message:

  • Thank you for removing our community as a proposed site.
  • We do not believe a bus depot should be located within any residential neighborhood.

If you plan to testify, please let us know by replying to this email so we can keep track of community participation.

  1. No Additional Community Presence Is Needed

At this time, there is no need for residents to attend the hearings in person, and there is no need for signs or demonstrations.

  1. Contacting the Board of Education or MCPS

Residents who wish to send comments by email are encouraged to share the same message:

  • Thank you for removing our community as a proposed site, and we do not believe a bus depot should be located within any residential neighborhood.

Big Thank YOU!

This outcome reflects the dedication, professionalism, and persistence of many residents who took the time to participate in the process. Your efforts made a difference.

We will continue to keep the community informed as the review progresses and will remain vigilant throughout the site selection process.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement.
